You can download MSN Messengeer Version 7 for Windows 2003 here.

INTERLUDE ON THE MILLENIUM FALCON

PHASE ALPHA

(Always remember that these characters do not belong to me but are graced with my genius, thus making them better than they ever were before. Also keep in mind that this is a TwipFic with a generous helping of HNS and a touch of Harvey McSweenism! Also realize that, contrary to popular belief, I am a mere mortal, and this story is not meant to dishearten you or diminish your meager achievements. One day, if you keep slogging away, you too may be able to create on my level.)

The Millenium Falcon shot across the outer spaces, it's thick and silvery hide was gleaming like a comet or something. The intrepid crew had just escaped the grasping clutchery of the Empire, which was headquartered on the giant Death Star that they had just escaped from. Princess Leia was saved by Han Solo and Luke Skywalker, plucked from the Death Star, which they had just escaped from, like a good-hearted feather from an evil bird. A couple of Tie Fighters chased them, but were speedily dispatched by the awesome phaser weapons of the Falcon.

Luke stood on the observation deck with his mentor, Obi-Wan. They both looked out the large window, staring into the rushing void that so paralleled Luke's dervish-like existence. Luke thought of Tatooine, his beloved home world, now a desert wasteland since the coming of the Empire. The planet of Luke's youth was a lush green paradise of fragrant gardens and sloshing ponds and oceans. The Tusken people were the forest protectors, frolicking through the Shush Migush bushes and Bandywock trees singing songs of hope and good cheer. And the winged Jawa would float by, sprinkling love dust from their mothy wings of goodness. But that was before the Empire came, bringing destruction, driving the Tusken people insane and stealing the lovely wings of the Jawa. Luke squashed the past, the past being too painful to think about. He still couldn't believe that his parents. Owen and Beru, were killed by those Stormtroopers. He was more determined than ever to see C-3po and R2-D2 delivered to the rebellion so they could get the secret plans for the Death Star they had just escaped from.

"Isn't warp speed fantastic?" Asked Obi-Wan, who was still staring out the giant window on the Falcon's observation deck.

"Yes." Answered Luke. "I just wish that those Stormtroopers wouldn't have killed my parents."

Obi-Wan put his hand on Luke's shoulder. "They're in a better place Luke, skipping across happyland in the illustrious company of the Force. Don't worry about them, I guarantee that your parents are a lot happier off this mortal coil and in the thrall of the eternal mysteries than in that hovel they were living in. I know I would be."

"I guess you're right," Luke said, "but I'll really miss the way Dad used to pinch my nipples when we wrestled and the long hot baths that Mom gave me that lasted for hours."

Obi-Wan was forming uncomfortable mental images when Chewbacca lumbered onto the observation deck. He was a native of the planet Wook, widely known as the Space Ape World. The Wookee walked over to Obi-Wan and Luke.

"We will be arriving at Yavin in four hundred and thirty two standard time minutes units," Chewbacca said, "just thought you'd like to know." Then he left.

The princess put her arm around Luke. "Everything will be okay, Luke."

"I know," Luke began, " I just wish Ben was alive to see us reunited, Leia. To see him struck down by Darth Vader was almost more than I could take. Oh, how I long for the beautiful oceans of Coruscant!"

"Hold that thought Luke, I've got to use the water closet." She said, wandering off to find the facilities.

After she left Luke alone, he felt he could let it all go. He fell tearfully to his knees and lamented four times in a row. The intense pain of losing his parents and his mentor really hurt a lot.

Just then, the ghostly image of Qui-gon shimmered into view. He regarded Luke with understanding and love. The ghost held up three fingers and blew Luke a kiss before finally blurring onto nothingness.

Luke understood everything perfectly. He walked to the Millenium Falcon's hothouse, a converted cargo hold stuffed with dripping jungle. As he passed the head, he heard Leia grunting and straining. He pounded on the door and ran away laughing as the Princess asked who was there.

He entered the hothouse and sat down among the verdant greenness. The adventure was just beginning.

DON'T WORRY. TO BE CONTINUED! JUST SPEND THE NEXT FEW WEEKS QUIETLY REFLECTING ON WHAT YOU'VE JUST READ. BUT DON'T TRY AND TAKE IT IN ALL AT ONCE! SLOWLY ABSORB THE PERFECTION.

But the really interesting part of the article is the part that says that the experiment (duplicated several times) released more energy than it costs. Now that, my friend, was the promise of Nuclear Fusion. Think of it this way: you start a generator, the fuel to run the generator is supplied by the generator itself creating a perpetual energy source. Now they still have to supply the tungsten...but this sounds like a serious energy breakthrough to me.

Moving your Windows iTunes library to another location
Posted By: mike
Ok, so I was running out of space on my c:\ drive and started freaking out because I wasn't going to be able to download next weeks episode of "The Office"...so I moved the iTunes folder (located automatically) from my My Docments/My Music folder to my e:\ drive.

Then I opened iTunes and tried setting my folder to my e:\itunes folder. Didn't work. So I tried some other stuff that also didn't work. So here's what I had to do.

First, I noticed that iTunes had replaced my iTunes folder under My Music. In it were two new library files (one is an xml file, the other is some binary file with your library.) I checked my old iTunes folder that I'd moved to my e drive and the same files were there. So I opened the xml file in that directory and replaced the path with My Documents\My Music\iTunes with e:\iTunes\. Then I copied these two files (the xml and the library files) to the My Documents\My Music\iTunes folder. Then I reopened itunes and everything was magically back where it was supposed to be. Hopefully this will be useful to someone.

The MRI as a lie detector
Posted By: Psi
While it's more like a truth confirmer, the idea is a little scary if people can tell what you're thinking just by reading a scan of your brain. The one thing this article overlooks is that the MRI isn't going to remain so clunky in the future. One of these days we're going to have the Star Trek MRI which is essentially a little flashy stick that we wave near someone's head. Judging from how quickly we got Cell/Sat. Phones, that day isn't as far as you'd imagine.

A little experiment for the winter (you can do it, too NZ... just put a summery twist on it!).

1) Get some Club Soda in a sealed bottle
2) Get it to -8 degrees Celcius.
3) Open it.

See, -8°C is above the freezing temperature of the liquid with the carbon dioxide dissolved and under pressure, but is below the freezing point of the liquid when you let the CO2 out. Nice.

This looks like something that could revolutionize the energy industry (and REALLY increase the liklihood of water based vehicles)...but the first thing they're going to try it with is a...mini heater? This looks like the energy companies desperately trying to appease the fossil fuel companies because if they know this works, why the heck else would they not begin replacing coal and nuclear almost immediately?

They can run, they can dance, they can skate and now they can catch a ball....
Posted By: Mike
10 years and there will be robot baseball leages. 20 years and they'll be playing exibitions against Major League teams. that's my prediction.

While this article seems to indicate that the applications for this arm are limited, it always amuses me that people who develop a robot arm that can catch things don't immediately think to attach it to a robot that can already walk. Sure there are limitations, but a robot that can detect and grasp things that are moving adds one more thing to the impressive lists of things that robots can do. Once you get enough things in the list, you have a fully functional robot. But then perhaps they're just trying not to scare anyone. After all, a robot arm that can do more than just perform some automated task...that can react to various stimuli at a rapid, precise pace...that's a robot arm that can now take even more jobs. I don't think I could catch a ball moving 300 mph. This robot is already faster and more dexterous than me :)

If you're going to watch with crappy cameras, what's the point?
Posted By: The watched
<rant>
Ok, let's ignore the fact that I'm against the whole surveillance society concept for a second. Over the past few days, I've been seeing images from cameras that range from hidden to obvious. In each case, the pictures were blurry and it was hard to identify the central subject in them, which leads me to the question, if you're going to have cameras (and this goes especially for you NASA), then make them high enough quality to do their job. Every time I see video of a crime taken in a convenience store or the search for a terrorist, I wonder how these people hope to find someone on the tape when you can't make out anything but the basic shape of anyone or anything in the picture. It's self defeating to spend money on something that doesn't work or is so half-baked that it prevents the use for which it was intended.

Drug created and marketed specifically to Black people
Posted By: Mike
Now this may sound like a conspiracy theorist talking...BUT...anytime a company tailors a drug specifically for one race, it raises major red flags to me. In an era of gene therapy and the long term and generational unknowns of genetically developed drugs, it seems like a very bad idea to allow one race to be the target market of a new drug. So if it doesn't work out and ends up sterilizing or subtly genetically altering your target market (black people), what are the implications of that whether or not intentional? Something just seems wrong with this picture.

Invest in this. I'm predicting robot masonry is going to take over within 10 years...and it's not just going to be faster, it'll be better. Sonographic technology will allow them to detect inconsistencies in concrete, computer precision will allow for very complex shapes to be created without an increase in cost. Architects will be able to go straight from CAD to drawing with no variance or mistakes from hard partying construction workers. Well, if the unions don't get involved and sue the technology out of existence....and even then it'll just be used in other countries where they don't care about their workforce.

RNA backup of genome in plants possibly found. (NY Times reg required)
Posted By: Mike
A plant that had had a genetic flaw bred into it reversed the flaw and fixed it's own genes. This article is interesting because they mention briefly that people might have this as well. If this turns out to be true, it might be fuel on the fire of people who wish to reconcile one of the major problems with creationism (the implied incestuous inbreeding and its tendecy to rapidly mutate decendents within a couple generations) and evolution. Maybe a few generations of inbred decendents of Adam and Eve would be all jacked up, but if the genome corrected itself, by the time a large community or two are formed and the self-repair kicks in, you'd have relatively unmutated large groups of people that would be capable of then broadening the gene pool further. Well, that's a theory anyway. Then again, if the idea of creationism sounds stupid, dwelling on the hows of it are probably just mental masturbation.

Whether you call it a cloaking device (Trek) or thermoptics (Ghost in the Shell), having a field that makes you invisible is both really cool and scary at the same time. Think of the next time you're speeding and you can't see the cop because he's cloaked in plain view...or on the lighter side, think of how cool it would be to cloak once you see the red, twirling lights. :)

They do have some drawbacks, but multiple emitters and some fast computers seem to be the remedy for that.

Posted By: Wha?
My favorite plan is the one that basically spreads spanish fly on enemy troops hoping that it would inspire them to become gay, and hence uneven and infocused. I'm wondering if that's
a) suffering from assuming that gays are not motivated to fight,
b) trying to make a point that gays shouldn't be in the military because our enemies decided to become gay
c) trying prove that homosexuality is a choice or a chemical imbalance
d) trying to re-enforce that military intelligence is peopled with bigotted idiots?

Luckily these things were shot down..that at least instills some confidence as well as the fact that they're trying to use non-lethal weapons.

I wonder what they'd do though if the gay inducement drug actually made them super-warriors? Would the US military give it to our troops if it made them all gay super men?

Microsoft applies for a patent for "IsNot" operator from basic.
Posted By: Mike
This seems pretty unnecessary until you start thinking about plans for programming in plain english (which is to say that you tell the computer what to do and it programs it for you). When someone says "Computer, write a program that tells me when it is not raining", Microsoft can say that they own the IsNot operator and can charge the developer of that system a license fee for the boolean value of IsNot. So people either pay, or force their "developers" to say "does not equal", which is the semantic equivalent.

Medical Tracking microchips approved for human use..
Posted By: Paranoid
The problem I have with use of this technology, even in the medical field is this: Instead of getting immediate treatment, people can now be turned away at the door (or the ambulance) if they don't have health insurance. They'll be treated differently without someone ever having talked to them because as soon as they enter the door the doctor will know who they are and how much coverage they have. Also, even if other companies (stores, etc) don't have access to the medical data, they can still use the unique identifier to track people when they come into a store and make purchases without the knowledge of the customer. They don't need their own RFID in clothes...they just use the RFID the person is carrying in their arm for medical emergencies.

SCREW. ALL. THAT.

A liquid that becomes solid when you HEAT it and then return to liquid state when the temp lowers.
Posted By: Mike
Now thing about that for a second. This could be employed in a number of ways, not the least of which is that it could be used to protect soldiers in the field who, for a few extra pounds, could wear a thin layer of this liquid that could be heated ala an electric blanket, and protect them from shells...or a tank in your car that detects a crash and deploys this stuff to a mesh in the impact area to protect against damage. There are a hundred other applications that might work if you think about it...so start thinking and applying for patents. :)

In a somewhat surprising turn, the US army is getting busted for torturing and taking pictures of Iraqi prisoners. If we do, the soldier's families are going to rebel.

    Posted By: Not Surprised
Well, anyone with any cynicism at all is not going to surprised by the fact that the Patriot Act is now being employed by the FBI in non-terrorism related investigations.

I fully expect the same kind of "if you're not committing a crime then you shouldn't be worried" attitude that I always get from people, but if it proves legal to use these anti-terror laws on US citizens, then you're going to see utter destruction of our privacy because the need for probable cause or material evidentiary justification are out the window.

Interesting that Will Ferrell plays both Bush AND the cheerleaders...if you think about it, we already kind of know what Bush looked like as a cheerleader in that way.

New Cancer treatment on the horizon!
    Posted By: Mike
This is a REALLY cool idea where they infect the tumor with a virus that kills only cancerous cells. They've already completed one round of HUMAN clinical trials now and this could be a major blow to cancer and a real relief for people suffering with prostate, liver, pancreatic, breast and other types of cancers. More impressively, they have tested it for IV use for wide spread cancer with positive effect. It's not a silver bullet, but it's working for some people who are terminal...stay tuned. Check out these cool Before and After shots.

One of my favorite quotes is: * A pen is a phallic symbol. The flow of ink from the tip of my pen represents ejaculation. My pen ran out of ink at this point because of my unconcious fear of castration.

    Here she is...Miss Afghanistan!
    Posted By: Mike
Vida Samadzai is competing for Miss World as Miss Afghanistan as the first Afghan woman to compete in a beauty competition in 20 years. On one hand, it's too bad that women's rights are taking them directly into objectification, but on the other, it makes you wonder how many other fine women are being hidden under those burkas. I think we should forget bombing buildings and start an anti-burka assault.

    More Pics below:

Yes, this entry might SEEM hypocritical, but I'm not really objectifying her because I really WOULD like to take her out to dinner, get to know her...blah blah blah..look at the pictures.

Stop the FCC from ratifying copy protection on TELEVISION signals.

    mpowell@fcc.gov;kabernat@fcc.gov;mcopps@fcc.gov;kjmweb@fcc.gov;
    jadelste@fcc.gov;fccinfo@fcc.gov

The "Broadcast Flag" will make it illegal to copy or re-transmit video digital television signal with the bonus side effect of rendering flagged programming unreadable by older technologies (ie: your dvd recorder next year might be able to record dvd's, but they won't play on your older hardware).

I encourage you to write the FCC email addresses above (click the link if you have outlook installed) and ask them to reject the idea. Do you really want hollywood and the television networks controlling how you record and use media you bought? Last time I checked, making personal copies for non-commercial use was called FAIR USE and was protected by copyright law.

BOO ME!

Pentagon's Terrorism Futures Market dies a very quick death

Thanks to the New York Times, the quick spread of information on the internet and a couple of Democratic senators, the terrorism futures site died a quick death...at least until someone there decides to launch it "privately" under another name.

My favorite part of the article is the reaction from DaBeers, the largest gem manufacturer in the world...sounds like someone is sweating. I also like the fact that it'll be one less thing that we, as men, will have to spend hundreds of hours working like dogs for to get a false sense of security.

The new Div-X (NY Times requres registration)
    Posted By: Mike
Disney wants to revive the self-terminating dvd technology made popular in 1998 as Div-X. Oh wait. It wasn't popular. Everyone hated it and it went down in flames. Oh...that'd never happen again -- UNLESS, people still wanted movies that played for more than two days! I know I sometimes accept the late fees if I can't get to a movie in time...but this would basically give me a coaster after two days that I don't have to return, but wouldn't work again unless I found some way to hack my dvd player...and that would never happen either ;)

Ok, if you don't understand the subject line, don't bother to click on the link because it will be equally meaningless...HOWEVER, if you do understand, this is a pre-paint prototype for a new Optimus Prime, which looks like it may be better than the original...even comes with regular AND mini-megatron gun. Disposable (working) paper phone.
    Posted By: Mike
This idea kicks ass. Strictly from an intelligence standpoint, the idea of the truly disposable phone is brilliant, but to make it from recycled paper makes it feel both ecologically and psychologically good to call someone, curse them out and then wad up the phone and throw it away. The best thing: they can't call you back. Crank Yankers will be pleased...with the added bonus of when you win the lottery and call your boss, you can then rip the phone up and throw it in the air like confetti.
